Pelican devours pigeon - caption competition
The St James's Park pelican, caught red-beaked on camera by Press Association photographer, Cathan McNaughton, and whose picture subsequently appeared on national TV and newspapers dining on pigeon, has inspired the Royal Parks Agency to launch a caption competition. They are encouraging would be comics to submit captions for the antics of pelicans Vaclav and Rusalka through the website www.royalparks.org.uk.:
Here are some starters:
1. 'Vaclav to Rusalka: What have you done? Where are those two tourists who were on the bench a moment ago?'
2. 'I don't know about you but since I've been watching re-runs of Jamie's School dinners, I've gone right off burgers and only fancy fresh food.'
The prize for the winning caption is a meal for two (to the value of 50) at the award-winning restaurant, Inn The Park, which overlooks the lake and the pelicans - in St. Jamess Park. Tables can be booked there by calling 020 7451 9999, although there is no guarantee that pigeon will be on the menu.
The winning caption and the winner's name will be published on www.royalparks.org.uk where a 'pelican brief' with some facts on the birds can be found.
