A photographic celebration of humanity in the heart of London
Regent's Park
Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship (M.I.L.K.) are captured in 300 winning photographs, of which 230 will be displayed as a spectacular outdoor exhibition along the Broad Walk, Avenue Gardens, Regent's Park, London from July 3 2003 - August 17 2003 (open from 10:00 to 20:30 daily). Admission Free.
The critically acclaimed M.I.L.K. Exhibition comes to London as part of its international tour. Inspired by the 1950's landmark photographic exhibition 'The Family of Man', M.I.L.K. began in 1998 with an epic global search to create a collection of extraordinary and geographically diverse images portraying humanity's Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship. The search took the form of a photographic competition attracting the work of leading photographers (including four Pulitzer Prize winners) from 164 countries
submitting a phenomenal 40,000 entries. Judged by legendary Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt, the resulting M.I.L.K. Collection comprises of 300 images of which over 230 will be displayed in Regent's Park.
"M.I.L.K. began as a dream, became an ambitious adventure and gathered strength as it grew. We see now that it took on a life of its own, ceased to be a project and became instead a gift." Says M.I.L.K. creator, Geoff Blackwell.
More than just an exhibition, M.I.L.K. takes the form of an impressive, large scale, all weather, open air display that will run over 200 metres, down the length of the main Broad Walk in Avenue Gardens, Regent's Park with the photographic images measuring up to 2 metres wide. Located at the end of the exhibition will be a 6 metres x 5 metres marquee screening a powerful audio-visual presentation of selected
M.I.L.K. images.
More than just images, M.I.L.K. portraits are photographic stories celebrating family life, friendship and love conveying real and spontaneous emotion. From a retired Canadian war veteran sharing a moment with his loyal canine companion to the tear streaked face of a young West African bride as she is bid farewell by her girlfriends, M.I.L.K. captures unforgettable moments of human life.
"Remember how powerful a photograph can be, more powerful than any bomb, as powerful as love"
[KIM PHUC, PROLOGUE AUTHOR FOR THE M.I.L.K. PUBLICATION "LOVE"]
On June 8, 1972 Nick Ut took a photograph of a young girl running naked from a burning city with her arms outstretched her body seared in napalm her skin was burning and she was in agony. That girl was Kim Phuc and that image became an international reminder of the horrors of war and the damage it can do to its most innocent of victims - children. Kim now serves as the President of The Kim Foundation, a not-for-profit
organisation providing support for children throughout the world who are innocent victims of war and as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO.
Avenue Gardens is in the South East corner of Regent's Park. Nearest tube stations are Regent's Park, Great Portland Street and Baker Street. Pay and display parking in and around the Park.
