Bats

Bats have suffered serious national declines in their numbers over the last few decades and we are working to protect and enhance their habitats and roosting sites in The Royal Parks. All bats are fully protected species under UK and European law.

In 2003, a bat survey funded by the Friends of Greenwich Park found the Park to be an important feeding site for common pipistrelles. Pipistrelles are Britain's smallest bat, weighing about the same as a 2p coin. They make their homes in the veteran trees and buildings throughout the Park and come out at dusk to feed on flying insects, consuming up to 3000 insects in a night.
