Green Park Station Redevelopment

Improvements to The Green Park

As part of London Underground's proposed upgrade works to improve the accessibility and operation of Green Park tube station, a number of improvements will also be made to The Green Park including:

  • Improved views both into and out from the Park
  • Improved appearance of the area around the Ritz Corner on Piccadilly
  • A greatly improved Royal Parks' catering concession with information point, right where it is needed most
  • An opportunity to enhance the horticultural and ecological value of the area, with improved landscaping
  • A new entrance to the station, direct from the Park, including improved access for people with restricted or reduced mobility.

These changes will improve the area for all those who visit, live near, and work around The Green Park.

Wildlife and Ecology

Although a few small trees will be lost in the scheme, compensatory planting will be undertaken and there will be no net loss. The proposal will also provide renewed topsoil in areas previously too poor to sustain significant plantings, therefore improving the biodiversity of the Park.

A survey of the site has been undertaken which has suggested a range of measures to reduce impact to wildlife and ecology. No roosting sites for bats have been found although the area is a possible place for bat foraging. Reducing the use of lighting at night and making use of downward pointing and triggered lighting are amongst the mitigation measures that will be adopted.

Construction Period

There will inevitably be some disruption during the construction period and we are working with London Underground to keep this to a minimum. A range of steps will be taken to reduce impact in four key areas: noise, visual, access and dust.

Timing of Works

To carry out this work, planning permission is required from Westminster City Council. A planning application is due for submission in summer 2008. If the application is successful, work is planned to begin in early 2009, and is due for completion in 2011. As the scheme is further developed timelines will become more refined.
