The Bushy Park Restoration Project

bushy parkThe Bushy Park Restoration Project aims to rejuvenate Bushy Park making the park more accessible for everyone, using £4.5m funding received from The Heritage Lottery Fund in April 2005. The restoration project has many elements.

Repairs and Upgrading to the Parkland infrastructure

Work commenced in September 2007 on the Parkland Repairs Contract. The Contractor is Gavin Jones. This contract covers repairs to and provision of new paths which form key links in Bushy Park, some fencing, furniture (seats, bins, etc.). So far the works have focussed on the area around Heron Pond and the Playground (Sept-Oct ’07). The contractor’s compound is located to the edge of the car park at Upper Lodge Road. Forthcoming work is listed below;

Footpaths

  • From Teddington Gate to Broom Clumps/Pheasant Gardens
  • Clapperstile plantation for the new gate to be provided later
  • Resurfacing of paths in the Woodland Gardens

bushy parkAdditional work is being undertaken on the Round Plantation. There will be more tree planting in certain areas and gate improvements. The work will continue through to September 2008.

Other works will also be commencing at the Water Gardens and at Broom Clumps in 2008. We apologise for any inconvenience that the works may cause to you during your visit to this large and inspiring historic park.

What you will see in 2008

The Welcome Centre

Welcome Centre

Work will commence February 2008 with completion late 2008 / early 2009. The Contractor is R Durtnell & Sons. The Welcome Centre involves the construction of a new building on the northern edge of the Pheasantry in the Broom Clumps area of the park. It will house a new café, education & community room, public toilets and new car park within the Broom Clumps.

Keepers Road will be reconstructed with the creation of a new path alongside keepers road up to Upper Lodge road. During the course of the works it will be necessary to close Keepers Road for a short period, we will give plenty of notice before doing this. Other works will also be commencing throughout the park and at the Water Gardens in 2008.

The Upper Lodge Water Gardens

bushy parkWork will commence in February 2008, the contractor is English Landscapes. The Water Gardens are currently in an area of the park inaccessible to the public. The restoration of this early 18th century feature has been long anticipated and will involve the restoration of the upper and lower ponds and cascade.

The works will comprise of:

  • Restoration and de-silting of the upper and lower ponds
  • Reforming the historical pond shape
  • Renewal of the water engineering
  • Restoration of the alcove and the cascade
  • New foot paths

Completion is anticipated Late Summer 2008. Other works will also be commencing throughout the park and at Broom Clumps in 2008.

The Brewhouse

The Brewhouse, located across the Longford River from the Water Gardens, will have repairs made to the fabric of the building. A new pedestrian bridge will give access across the Longford River with views across the Brewhouse meadow.

Park Land Work

bushy parkGeneral infrastructure repairs to the park will continue, involving the creation of new footpaths and resurfacing some existing ones; repairs and improvements to park entrances; repairs to fencing across the parks; and the desilting and restoration of water bodies.

The Education Centre

Located in the stockyard the refurbishment of the existing Education Centre will commence in February 2008. A larger centre will be created with offices for the education and community engagement officers. The new Education Centre will re-open in May 2008.

Beyond 2008

In 2009 further park improvements will be made, including the restorations of the Arethusa (Diana) Fountain.
